Monster

monster

Monster was written by Rich Skrenta at Northwestern University in 1988.

Monster is one of the first of an entire generation of text-based multiplayer RPGs called "MUDs" or "MUSHes", which in turned inspired the modern MMORPG genre (World of Warcraft, Neverwinter Nights). Monster distinguished itself from the text adventure games that came before it with multiplayer capabilities. In addition, it offered a feature that few games allow even today: the players themselves create the fantasy world as part of the game.

Players can create objects, make locations, and set up puzzles for other players to solve. Game mechanisms allow players to:

  • Create and describe new objects and locations
  • Specify how game objects function
  • Provide text descriptions for events that may happen
